Towson Tigers Game 26 Recap, Weather You like It or Not

Towson TigersThe Tigers got bit by the big inning again, then played VCU tough, but the weather cut short any potential comeback and the game was called after six innings.

Gavin Weyman, who has been the Friday starter since the second weekend of the the season, came in for an inning of relief today, possibly signaling a shake-up in Towson’s pitching rotation. Given his recent dominance it would make sense to see Michael Adams take the bump in the opener at William & Mary, but David Marriggi has certainly pitched well enough earn the honor as well. We shall see.

Towson Tigers Game 26 Preview – Battle of the Black & Gold

Towson Tigers

Towson will take on the Rams of Virginia Commonwealth University today, with the first pitch at Schuerholz Park scheduled for 2 P.M. (weather permitting). The Tigers are seeking their third straight win before returning to conference play this weekend at William & Mary.

VCU is a large, well-respected research university located in Richmond, which is kind of funny because due to it’s charming name I had always assumed it was a quaint liberal arts college nestled in some hills somewhere. You learn something new every day. VCU has so many supposedly famous alumni there is an separate wikipedia page devoted to them, but I have to say I wasn’t too impressed. Most of GWAR went there , which is cool, but also the founder of 4Chan. If you need a reason to root against them, there you go.

Don’t dox me, bro.

Towson Tigers Weekend 7 Recap – That’s a Series Win!

After a thrilling victory on Saturday, Towson got a brilliant performance by senior Michael Adams on Sunday, delivering a 1-0 victory with a complete game shutout over Hofstra. It was the Tigers’ first series win this season and they are now 3-3 in conference play.

After playing 13 games at home during the month of March (which would have been 16, including every weekend series, if the previous weekend’s games against Delaware hadn’t been moved due to weather), Towson will become road warriors during April. For the remainder of this month they will 13 out of 18 games on the road, with the only games at Schuerholz Park coming during the week.

Nice jacket.

Cardiac Tigers! Towson Wins on a Palacios Walk-Off Grand Slam!

Towson has not won many games this season, but they certainly do make them memorable.

Down 3-0 going into the bottom of the ninth inning, facing Chris Weiss (Hofstra’s closer and one of the best strikeout pitches in college baseball at 16.30 K/9), the Tigers rallied for five runs, walking it off when Richie Palacios blasted a two-out grand slam over the right field fence.

You can get the full recap, including the tense moments as Billy Lennox and Palacios both fell behind 0-2 against Weiss, on Towson’s website, including video of the thrilling conclusion.

Towson Tigers Weekend 7 Preview

Towson TigersThe Towson Tigers continue conference play this weekend by welcoming another New York-area school to Schuerholz Park, this time Hofstra University. Hofstra is the largest private college on Long Island, which really makes it sound like they’re searching for something, anything, to brag about, but in actuality it is a fine institution of higher learning. Their mascot is the Pride, which apparently refers to two lions who became their athletic mascots in the 1980’s. I’m pretty sure you need more than two lions to have a pride, but whatever. Their alumni include Christopher Walken and that. Is. All that I, really. Need. To know. About that.

Punctuation, what. Is? It for. Anyway?

Oh, yeah, baseball…

Towson Tigers Game 22 Recap

Towson TigersThings started off well for the Towson Tigers today, taking an early lead on an unearned run in the top of the first. George Washington responded with two in the bottom of the inning, but it was a close game for the first few innings. The wheels came off in the fourth, however, as the Colonials scored six, five of the unearned variety. They would score four more in the seventh to finish things off.

Big innings have been Towson’s bane far too often this season, as a lead-off hit or walk gets compounded by an error and the proverbial floodgates open. You can almost feel the Tigers trying too hard. Not to get all Yoda on you, but great teams don’t try too hard. They play hard. They practice hard. But, they don’t try to do anything. They just do it (regardless of their footwear).

There is talent on Towson’s roster. One some days the pitching is excellent. On some days the bats are loud. On many days the defense is unimpeachable. Unfortunately, in 2018 it has been a rare occurrence for all of those things to happen in the same game.

But, guess what?! There are more games to be played. And playing baseball is a beautiful thing.

Towson Tigers Game 22 Preview

Towson Tigers

Weather permitting, the Tigers will make a short trip to our nation’s capitol today for a mid-week game against George Washington. The university, not the dead president. Nothing ever comes easy.

The GWU baseball team is on a five game winning streak and has some serious thump in their lineup. Senior Isaiah Pasteur is the biggest thumper, bopping six home runs on the season, three just this past weekend. He also pitched four innings of one-run ball on Saturday, earning Atlantic 10 Player of the Week honors. No word on how he likes his milk.

It can’t be coincidence that George Washington University uses Colonials as their mascot and their colors are basically the same as the uniform colors of the colonial forces in the original Battlestar Galactica. Can it?

Apollo, Adama, and Starbuck from the original Battlestar Galactica

It can’t.

Towson Tigers Weekend 6 Recap

Towson Tigers

No matter where you go, you will find people complaining about the weather, but I think people in Maryland really have a strong argument. Especially this time of year, you just don’t know what you’re going to get from week to week. Take today, for instance; in Baltimore it’s in the mid 40’s, a little cooler than the average temperature of 58°. But if you look back over the last 10 years, today’s high temperature has fluctuated between 70 and 37 degrees. When you live in Maryland you wait a few extra weeks before putting away the winter coats…but, yeah, go ahead and take out the shorts and flip flops, too.

That crazy weather threw a loop in Towson’s schedule, as their mid-week games at University of Virginia were cancelled and their weekend series was moved from Towson to Delaware. Yes, that means the weather was a little nicer in Delaware. I said it was crazy.

Delaware came into the series led by two starting pitchers, Kyle Hinton and Billy Sullivan IV, with sub-2.00 earned run averages. Disappointingly, neither disappointed, especially Sullivan IV, who pitched six shutout innings with 10 strikeouts against one walk. Finally, on Sunday, Towson broke out the bats against starter Nick Spadafino and two Blue Hen relievers and won 10-2, snapping their six game losing streak.

The Tigers are now 1-2 in conference play, tied for third place (take it where you can get it). The Colonial Athletic Association looks like it could be a slog this year, with only two teams currently under .500, but if the pitching improvements hold up and they get a little more consistency on offense, Towson could make life hard on their competition. Just get hot by tournament time, right?

A Closer Look at Towson Pitching as Conference Play Begins

Towson TigersStrange things are afoot at the Circle K, if the Circle K in this case were the pitchers mound at Schuerholz Park. The first thirteen games of the Towson baseball season were marred by poor pitching, as the Tigers racked up walks, wild pitches, and hit batters in numbers that would stagger a mathematician. It was enough to make me question the very clichés at the heart of baseball.

I suspected that the horrific numbers were symptomatic of a natural learning curve, as players acclimated themselves to new coaching and coaches figured out how to best utilize their players. I think the numbers bear that out. Though it has not yet translated into victories, the turnaround that the Tigers’ pitching staff has made in the last two weeks is borderline stunning.
