Filament Friday 04/21/2014 – Special Monday Edition!

Thanks to some technical difficulties and the Easter weekend madness, I was not able to post the Filaments on Friday, but I refuse to let you down. So call these Monday Meanderings or something, whatever you’d like. I’ll just be over here eating deviled eggs…

  • Don’t know if you’ve heard, but the dang Wizards are up 1-0 in their first round playoff series. Of course, the locals can’t help but do their best to crap all over the good news. If a win isn’t good enough for you and you’d like to dwell on John Wall being forlorn, or Brad Beal’s jump shot disappearing, or Trevor Booker getting outplayed by one of the better big men in the league, just head right over here.
  • Here’s a slightly more positive take on the game, which featured the Wizards coming back from a 13 point deficit in the third quarter to take the game.
  • Now, this is more like it. Still, I find it so ridiculous to keep reading about how John Wall and Brad Beal, who were a combined 7-25, didn’t “bring it” or were no-shows or something – as though Chicago doesn’t have one of the best defenses in the league. They clearly were focusing on Wall and Beal, and the Wizards punished them by going inside. Chicago doesn’t have the horses to shut down every aspect of the Wizards offense, so if they choose to lock down Nene and others in Game 2, it will open up more opportunities for the young backcourt to get flowing. So, all good Wizards fans, the team is up 1-0, try to enjoy it.
  • For whatever reason, I fell off of The Simpsons bandwagon a few years ago. I’m not one of those who think it’s awful now – I do still like it, when I catch it – I just don’t catch it that often. Anyway, that’s a long way of saying that this is one of my favorite couch-gag openings ever.
  • I’m disgusted and curious all at the same time. Disgurious? Curusted? I don’t know, but this is craft beer flavored ice cream.
  • Batman: The Animated Series was so good, and I used to watch it so religiously, that it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say it played some part of my losing my scholarship in college. So, let’s hope new shorts like this one don’t come along too often, I really need to keep my job.
  • I guess if we’re including Bats, we can’t leave out Mr. Boring.
  • I’m giving you 2-for-1 Zen Pencils today – the new one is a Mother Jones quote, but it’s the Carl Sagan one that really speaks to me. Either way, as a new father, I encourage you to get your kids to read. Because books are awesome.

  • It’s been a rough early season to be a Cubs fan, but at least I don’t have Charlie Villanueva tattoos on each arm. My favorite part of that photo is that Charlie clearly can’t believe his luck.
  • When the going gets tough, the tough…head over to Cubs Den for their reasonable insights and analysis. Yes, I have a writer/man-crush on John Arguello…
  • Two bright spots for the Cubs have been the ones that really need to shine brightest, Anthony Rizzo and Starlin Castro.
  • One of my favorite Cubs on this team is Carlos Villanueva, but he has not been very good as a starter this year and really should be the team’s main long reliever. Jake Arrieta can’t get here soon enough. And how is it, with only a handful of Villanueva’s in American professional sports, I seem to end up writing that name just constantly.
  • I spent some time in a hot tub this weekend, and this was all I could think of (SFW, perverts…). Rub-a-dub.
  • Not all dragons like gold, some prefer more common items. I bet there’s a horde of single socks out there.
  • The Saints are just biding time until the NFL Draft, which is just over 17 days away. Many prognosticators think the team will target a wide receiver or cornerback in the first round, due to the deep pool of talent at those positions and the Saints propensity to stock up at those positions.
  • Sports Illustrated, however, has them going with a pass rusher, which would also be a very Saints thing to do.
  • I did some DC Comics themed links earlier, so in the interest of equal time, here’s the new X-Men: Days of Future Past trailer. Squee…
  • If you’re in the Annapolis, MD area, or don’t mind driving however far, the Silopanna Music Festival returns this year, with headliners The Flaming Lips.
  • Your Song of the Week.
